Regarding the Mindfulness Practice homework assignment, please reflect on that process and share its impact: positive, negative, or neutral. How could you use this in your own life or how could it benefit your clients?

Taking time to be present and mindful was really helpful in clearing my mind and great way to self care. Through this practice, it helps reduce stress and be more in tune with with your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. There tends to be a lot of distractions, busyness, and media around us all the time so taking the time to escape can be beneficial.

As we discussed in class closure last week, please state 2 things that you are taking away from this course in Human Behavior and the Social Environment.

One thing that I am taking away from this course is remembering to always consider the person in environment approach. Through using an ecological perspective when engaging clients, the provider can help identify the stressors that are in the individual’s life in order to then draw on the client’s strengths to find solutions. Second, I learned the importance of having an understanding of development throughout the lifespan when engaging and assessing clients and being aware of how their development and the environment interact.

  • Share 2 changes/additions you made to your website (note if they were peer suggested or your own ideas) and explain your reasoning behind it. If you did not make any changes, please state as such.
  • I did not make the changes to my blog post primarily because I do not feel that I will use the website outside of this class such as for employers. However, I am glad that I learned how to create a website and feel that it will be beneficial knowledge for the future such as developing one for an organization . I just do not want a website concerning myself on the internet.
  • Explain the relationship between stress, physical health, and mental health as it relates to subjective well-being as concretely evidenced by the text.
  • Stress affects all aspects of one’s life including physical and mental health. According to the text, stress affects the automatic nervous system releasing hormones throughout the body to prepare for an attack whether real or perceived. Although this is necessary in real emergency situations, this release of hormones can be harmful if it is continual. Some affects would be higher risk of illness and disease. Another risk to high levels of stress would be concerning mental such as the development of anxiety or depression. Therefore, stress affects the whole well-being of the person and it is important that every individual find a coping strategy that works for them.

Give one example of your own thinking at one or more points in your life that reflect the following:

dualism- An example in my own thinking for dualism would be when I believed that I and those in my in group had the “right” ideas and those that were different than me or in the out group had the wrong ideas. This would have occurred before I was questioning the rightness of those in my in group such as my parents when I was a teenager.

multiplicity- An example of multiplicity in my own thinking would be when I was surrounded my numerous viewpoints and learned that there are numerous perspectives to consider.

relativism- An example of relativism in my own thinking would be that through evidence I know what is right and that not all all ideas are equally good.

What are two marker events that could help a young adult to develop into their current level of thinking?

Broderick (2015) states that one marker event according to Perry’s theory of postformal thought that develops these different levels of thinking would be going to college or higher education where one would be taking advanced courses and hearing numerous different viewpoints. Another marker would be being around people that are considered to be in your out group. Spending time with those that hold different viewpoints can help develop their thinking and beliefs.

Referring to the peer review process for student websites, please state three changes you would recommend for your peer’s website and justify reasons for those changes.

One change that would be beneficial for Krystal would be to name the blog with a title as it currently has the template title. Another change that may add value to the blog would be to add pages that tell a little about Krystal and her work as a graduate student. Lastly, it would be beneficial to elaborate on purpose of the blog.
Citing the text for specific supportive evidence, name one positive aspect and one negative aspect that influenced your adolescent development.

One positive aspect that influenced my adolescent development would be my parents’ and ohter influential adults’ involvement in my life during this time. They were supportive and showed acceptance. By praising my strengths and showing concern for my needs they aided in building self esteem and social adjustment (Broderick, 378). One negative aspect that influenced my adolescent years would be the media and consumer culture. The media often introduces violent, sexual, and commercial messages that are inappropriate for young adolescents. Also, the amount of time spent on media devices could be used for other uses and spending quality time with family and friends (386).
